woodstock vt lake george or ausable chasm

I would really appreciate any help deciding how to spend the last couple of days on our journey home from the New England states back to Ohio. Would we better off seeing Ausable Chasm in New York and spending the night in Plattsburg and our final day in Lake George. The other option would be to go through Woodstock Vt and spending two days in Lake George? Decisions decisions. I am under the impression that Woodstock is beautiful farm country but, I could be wrong. The Ausable Chasm sound intriguing. Which is more spectacular? Thank in advance for any replies.

Tough choices.

First, are you with children? If so, they%26#39;ll like Lake George and all it%26#39;s related activities. ie boating an theme parks.

Are you visiting before or after Labor Day? If after Labor Day, Lake George village will be closed. That%26#39;s right. The town closes up; but, there still may be some places that are still open.

I really like Ausable Chasm. It%26#39;s pretty interesting. Try googling it for pictures and info. You may want to conside Lake Placid as a tie-in with AC.

There%26#39;s nothing to do in Plattsburg. It%26#39;s about an hour south of Montreal. At the Plattsburg exit off the Northway (aka I-87), there are some chain hotels. You can print hotel discount coupons from www.roomsaver.com (it may be roomsaverS with an s.)

In Lake Placid, there are a few chain hotels, but they%26#39;re on the pricier side. Lake Placid (village) is an adorable and cute town. LP is open year-round. Very upscale, unlike Lake George. When I think Lake George, I think the masses.

If it were me, I%26#39;d go to Ausable Chasm and Lake Placid. Great place to spend 2 days and a night.

One last question, do you plan on taking I-90 (NY State Throughway) back to Ohio? Or do you plan on going the long way?

I agree with dhammer53. I really like Woodstock (VT), but since if you are not planning on staying there, I would rather stay around Lake Placid than Lake George and certainly Plattsburgh. If you like the outdoors, the Adirondack region is a great place for hiking and other activities, no doubt. If you are looking to visit quaint villages, I would say Woodstock is a good choice, as are Lake Placid and even Saranac Lake, though I have a preference for villages in Vermont, in general.

As noted though, Lake Placid is pricey in season (well, so is Woodstock). Also, you are best to check ahead as there are often big events, such as Ironman USA in the end of July where absolutely everything in Lake Placid will be booked up and hotels will often require a several night stay during this period or during other major events. Camping will give you plenty of options though.

Thanks for the info sounds like Ausable Chasm and Lake Placid may be the way to go. We coiuld see Ausable Chasam and then stay in lake Placid. We were hoping to see some Vermont or New Hampshire farm country as well. Any Suggestions on routing. DH and I are going on this trip. Do you know if tubing the Ausable River is one to be frightened of? Also is the water exceptionally cold in August since it is in the northern part of the country? Wasn%26#39;t sure what route to take back to cinti since we would like to get home at least by Saturday with a day to rest before getting back to the the same old grind. The days I am looking to fill up is Wednesday, Thursday possible back on Friday or Saturday. We are looking at the second week in August. Any must see or dos would be helpful. The route around Lake Ontario looks pretty neat but didn%26#39;t know if it was doable in the time frame available. Nothing like trying to squeeze everything in since we have never been in that region of the country before. Thanks again for any suggestions!

It%26#39;s a bit hard to recommend a particular route from Franconia to Ausable Chasm to see Vermont farmland, but pretty much any route off the interstates and single digit state routes should give you what you want, if time is not an issue. General rule for Vermont: the mountains go north-south, so the roads in these directions are generally in valleys; east-west you are usually going more up and down.

In New York, route 9N and 86 towards Lake Placid from Ausable Chasm are pretty scenic, especially closer to Lake Placid. And to head back west, I%26#39;ve heard route 3 is scenic, though I haven%26#39;t really been past Saranac Lake myself, so I don%26#39;t know first-hand.

Hope this helps.

cintigirlCincinnati, every place mentioned here I know well personally. This is my playground hence I may be able to give some ideas but first can you tell me when are you planning on traveling? If in August I would forget about Lake George. It is a zoo at that time of the year. Moreover, there are famous horse races in Saratoga and the whole area is overbooked and very overpriced. So when are you traveling? When in New England are you visiting? Do you have any specific places in New England you planning to visit? I had driven several times to Ohio from the Lake Placid area, never to Cincinnati but to Cleveland, Mansfield, Tiffin and a few other places.

Hi, We will be leaving Franconia on the 8th of August and have probably two days before we start heading home unless we just can%26#39;t make ourselves go back! Three days tops! Any Suggestions for MUST things to see or do before we leave the area. So many options! Soo few Day! Thanks for your reply!

I鈥檓 sorry I made you wait so long.

OK! Here are my suggestions. From Franconia find your way to route 117 which connects you with route 302 West towards Lisbon and Bath. These are very small town. Continue on route 302 to Barre and connect there with I-89 North. We usually go through Graniteville and some local roads that are not even on a map so I don%26#39;t want to confuse but if you are interested in a granite quarry, seeing a nice visitor center and taking a tour then maybe it is worthy to find it.

Anyway, connect to I-89 North and I highly suggest taking route 100 North exit 10 to Stowe. Along route 100 it is as picturesque New England scenery as you can only imagine. In the afternoon continue on route I-89 North to Burlington. Wonderful town. Go to Church Street.

In the morning take a first ferry to Port Kent, NY. This is a very scenic one-hour long ride. From what I understand now reservations are recommended if you are taking a car.

A couple miles or so you are going to pass AuSable Chasm. Look for a sign and make a left turn.

After you finish your visit take a Route 9N towards Lake Placid (turn left after entering 9N). You will pass through small towns and villages of Keeseville, Clintonville, Au Sable Forks, Jay, Wilmington. Once you are in Jay make a sharp turn right to route 86 which takes you all the way to Lake Placid. When in Wilmington you%26#39;ll get to a 4-way intersection, a sharp turn left is to Lake Placid. If you chose to continue straight this is a road that goes to the top of Whiteface with spectacular views on a clear day. It really is worthy to go there. You need to pay a fee but I don%26#39;t know how much is recently. I just hike there.

Return to Wilmington and turn right to route 86. In Lake Placid there is a lot to do. Check this website for activities.

Stay overnight in Lake Placid or Saranac Lake. In the morning take a route 86 through Saranac Lake to Tupper Lake. In Tupper lake visit a new museum and count on spending there at least a couple hours.

Then continue on route 3 all the way to Watertown, NY and connect with route I-81 South. It is a long drive through the Adirondacks but beautiful.

From Watertown it is 640 miles to Cincinnati on route I-81 then I-90 through Pennsylvania. .

You may need to stay overnight somewhere. Maybe Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo. I don鈥檛 know enough about any of them to recommend one or another.

BTW, forget about staying in Plattsburgh.

Sooooo many places so little time great suggestions! Will definitly do some research on the places you mentioned. Great Ideas! Thank You!

If you have to stop between Watertown and Cincinnati, definitely stay in Rochester or near one of the Finger Lakes. The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua is right on Canandaigua Lake and offers great views.
