Need help for a 2 day trip to Long Island including Montauk

We are flying into Islip airport on a Wed morning and staying that night near the airport. We%26#39;re returning to Chicago on Thursday early evening. On the day we arrive (Wed) I%26#39;d like some suggestions for public beaches in the area. We%26#39;re a senior couple and just really want to see nice scenery and walk on a beach.

Also, the next day we planned on driving out to Montauk lighthouse, this is the day our flight leaves, so we need to be back by 4pm. My question is, is this doable for the time we have? Also what else, time permitting could we see. Also any recommendations for a nice lunch on the way to Montauk? This is our first time on Long Island, but of course, it%26#39;s a very short trip.

Thanks very much for any help!

hey dead end:

I%26#39;m afraid that the time you have is not enough to make it out to Montauk...unless you charter a small plane and go into Montauk airport...the traffic here has become insane, you%26#39;d get there and have to turn around to come back.

Your best bet would be to head on over to Fire Island - there are beautiful beaches there and you could stay over Wednesday night on FIre Island.

Have fun!

Thanks RLIF.... I%26#39;m so sorry though. It%26#39;s only about 70 miles or so, the traffic must be pretty bad then. Maybe if we leave really early in the morning?? In any event we%26#39;ll find something to do that I%26#39;m sure will be fun. Thanks again.

If anyone has any ideas, I%26#39;d appreciate it.

Hi deadendangel.

I would recommend either staying Wednesday night in Montauk or taking the train from Sayville (3 miles south of ISP airport) to Montauk on Thursday. Then taking a taxi from Montauk train station to one of the beaches. You can check out the train schedule from the LIRR web site. The train ride is actually nice. But to tell you the truth the beach at the light house is not that nice. It is very rocky. I prefer some of the beaches on Fire Island. You can take a ferry from Sayville or Patchogue (5 miles SE of ISP airport). My favorite is Davis park or Watch hill. If you stay late, bring mosquito repellent.

Have Fun.

Dead end:

When you arrive on a weekday, the traffic is terrible, so bad in fact that a phrase has been coined ';the trade parade'; This is all of the carpenters, painters, builders, etc. that head out to the Hamptons to work. None of the tradespeople can afford to live out there, so they all come from points west and try to squeeze their way out east. Even as late as midday, it takes 2 hours to get from Riverhead NY to East Hampton, NY (which is still a half-hour from Montauk on a good day). Unless you were going to stay over on Wednesday night, it would not be worth your while time-wise.

However, if you do head out that way, stop in Amagansett for luch at a place aptly named ';LUNCH'; It is really called the lobster roll, but the sign says ';LUNCH';
