You can leave the car in a hotel in Queens and take the train from flushing Queens, Into manhattan. Queens is a nice area like Whitestone there is an extended stay it states Laguardia Airport but it is by the whitesetone express way.
Another option is upstate New York you can catch the metro north train from Monroe, there is a park and ride. Tuxedo is another park and ride.
In Middletown there is a park and ride. In Warwick new york there is a bus Park and ride that is a New jersey transit bus to manhattan. If you do stay the night I would suggest Middletown,N.Y. Orange county.
There are plenty of hotels there close to the metro North.The closest to the metro north in middletown is the Super 8 the Holiday Inn marriot court yard hampton inn Howard johnsons.
