Location - 360W 28th Street

I%26#39;m looking at the possibility of renting an apartment for my stay in New York (8 days) and was wanting to know what the location of it is like.

The Apartment is at 360W 28th Street. Does anyone know if there are many restaurants, shops or bars around that area. It looked like it was a bit residential.

thanks

There are no areas of Manhattan that are totally ';residential'; without restaurants, shops or bars to service the people that live there. ;) You might have to walk a block or two but that%26#39;s all. I found a photo of the building and an apt. in it which happened to be for sale.

The building is unusual looking (I%26#39;ve passed it and wondered what it was and how it got there) and is built around a moderate income housing complex called Penn South. Here%26#39;s a map of Penn South

If the apt. looks good and the owner sounds genuine, I%26#39;d think this would be a good spot. You%26#39;ll need to walk north, south or east of the apartment complex, but it won%26#39;t be far.

Thanks for that map NYWhiz, i did a bit of a search too and the building did look a little odd too me. From your map it shows that there%26#39;s a supermarket just around the corner.

This is the apartment i%26#39;m looking at, http://vrbo/137293

it looks pretty nice and the guy who rents it out got back to me within a day and also sent through alot of information about the Chelsea area. I was hoping to stay more up around the times square area, but from what you said this seems alright.

Also what is your opinion on the Greenwich Village area, i%26#39;ve been told it%26#39;s good to stay down there too, but i suppose it%26#39;d depend on what you want to do. I basically want to do everything i can, tourist things during the day and checking out shows, bars and restaurants at night.

Gosh, that apartment looks very very nice and I love the idea of the balcony if you%26#39;re coming during warmer weather. What month are you coming, how many are you?

Yes, Greenwich Village is lovely, in general more attractive than Chelsea. But if you wanted to stay near Times Square (although I wonder why) there are plenty of apartments near it. Nyhabitat.com and other websites have apartments on west 46, 47, 48, 49 st all of which are near TS.

Yeah i like the look of it as well (even though it looks similar to the one that is for sale or was for sale). We%26#39;ll be there from the beginning of October for 8 days and there are just two of us (girls).

I wasn%26#39;t quite sure exactly where to stay, I have found another apartment up on 49th btwn 9th %26amp; 10th, which looks alright as well, i think i just thought around Time Square as it would be near things to do, so i thought that would be a good place to stay.

A friend who was there in Oct 2005 said to stay near times square or down towards the south a bit more. But i%26#39;m not sure how far down he thought.

I suppose the Meat Packing district is down around Greenwich as well and from what i%26#39;ve been told that%26#39;s where people go out. Really not sure now where to stay now. Maybe 28th would be a good option.

The meatpacking district is between Chelsea and the village. West 28th is considered Chelsea. If you%26#39;re into clubbing, they%26#39;re mostly in Chelsea. The only thing I will say is I don%26#39;t know if being in the middle of that big apt. complex will make walking home at night feel weird/desserted. On blocks where there are lots of shops (delis etc.) it%26#39;s always busy.

I really don%26#39;t think staying in/near Times Square is necessary unless you plan on going to lots of shows. And frankly, I wouldn%26#39;t discount staying uptown. If you%26#39;re in your 20%26#39;s-30%26#39;s, many people your age live on the upper east and west sides.

Yeah i%26#39;m not too sure just how much clubbing we will be doing, we%26#39;re around our 30%26#39;s (29/34) but i%26#39;d say we%26#39;ll be out on the weekend. And i%26#39;d say we%26#39;ll just be catching one or two shows. So i%26#39;m starting to think we don%26#39;t need to be that close to Times Square.

Think i%26#39;ll have another think about the area to stay. Thanks for all your help. :-)

I learn so much on this forum! And I love looking at apts., especially a 420sf studio in Chelsea that sold for $420,000.

jode912, I%26#39;d definitely pick the West Village or even Chelsea over Times Square. You really don%26#39;t want to walk out your door every day, greeted by hordes of tourists, do you?

Chelsea or the Village (East or West) is going to be MUCH more fun for you than staying near Times Square. It%26#39;s very easy to get to TS to see shows etc, but will be more exciting to wander around a ';real'; neighborhood afterwards.

Also, 49th between 9th and 10th aves is FAR from the train. It%26#39;s a long, not so very nice walk from the nearest subway (the A/C line on 8th ave). That area has become much more interesting though (used to be called ';Hell%26#39;s Kitchen'; and now goes by ';Clinton';). There are lots of new restaurants and bars there if you decide to go that route.

Have fun!

Hi Bettina %26amp; Squidalina, thanks for that information, I think i was looking at staying up around times square as i thought it%26#39;d be handy with alot of things (not sure exactly) to do, but from what you%26#39;ve said around chelsea or the west/east village is sounding more appealing.

Because i%26#39;m not sure exactly, what area (streets) is the West or East Village? Or maybe i should ask is there any area i shouldn%26#39;t stay? Looks like i%26#39;m going to start looking further down now.

What are your opinion%26#39;s on that apartment on 28th Street too? NYWhiz was saying it%26#39;s amongst a huge apartment complex. Should i look at something further down?

Am happy for as many opinions as possible. Just really need to find something soon as i%26#39;ve only got 3 months until we get there.

And also, do you know if the ice rink in Central Park will be open at the beginning of October, thought i%26#39;d read that it wouldn%26#39;t be.

Thanks
