Does anyone know the names of the different avenues. I know that 6th. avenue is the Avenue of the Americas. It would help if I could find out the most popular ones as so many things refer to them differently and I stay quite confused as to where I am. I haven%26#39;t been to New York for a long time and this info simply evades me. Please help if you can.
Avenues and Names
Get a good map of NYC so that you can see all the avenues and their names. In addition to Avenue of the Americas, there is Park, Madison and Lexington Avenues. Way on the east side there is York Avenue and East End Avenue. On the west side, there is Columbus, Amsterdam and West End Avenues. In Harlem, there is Lenox Avenue. In the LES there is Alphabet City--Avenues A, B, C and D. Again, a map will help you get oriented.
Avenues and Names
Locals hardly - if ever - use ';Avenue of the Americas.'; We simply say 6th Avenue.
6th ave. is the only avenue in MIDTOWN with 2 names. All the others either have a name name (like Park Ave.) or a number name (like Fifth Ave.) . Here%26#39;s a map of midtown that shows all the aves.

Things change slightly going uptown and change a lot downtown. Remember Broadway runs diagonally so it%26#39;s not in the same place relative to other aves. depending on where you are.
Thanks for all the info. It really helps. And sorry about ';the avenue of the americas'; comment---I am not a new yorker so I made a mistake. Again, thanks for all and especially the map notes.
