Using a debit card in stores?

Just wondering whether stores in NY will accept my Nationwide debit card for payments, or whether I%26#39;ll have to use a credit card? Thanks!

They%26#39;ll accept your debit card and you can even get cashback to save you from having to go to the ATM

Many, if not most, stores (other than a little mom-and-pop newsstand) will accept debit cards. Indeed, some stores (supermarkets; chain drug stores) will also let you get ';cash back';, which is like getting cash from your account at a cash machine, but WITHOUT the fee.

Excellent - thanks guys. I applied for the Nationwide card before my last trip to NY because they dont charge weird fees for spending abroad, but it didnt arrive in time for my hol. Going again in Nov and want to use it, but wasnt sure whether a UK debit card would be a prob. Now just got to hope the exchange rate stays so good!

The Nationwide card is fabulous. If you have to use an ATM try the HSBC as they don%26#39;t charge a machine user fee--other banks might not either but I only know definitely about HSBC. There are tons of them around.

After years of chip and pin in the UK. I found it quite worrying using my cards in NY. More often than not the signature wasn%26#39;t even checked.

Is there a lot of debit/credit card crime in the US?

I assume your debit card has a VISA of Master Card logo on it. In that case, you can use it in any establishment (most all, except small ones) that indicate they accept those cards. Most of the time, the transaction will be handled like a credit card transaction, that is, they will give you a receipt to sign, except that the money will come out of your checking (current) account instead of going to your credit card account. Some supermarkets and a few other stores will process it like a ';pure'; debit card transaction, that is, they will ask you to key in your secret code. These latter type of transactions are the only ones where you can get cash back. Of course, you can also use your debit card to get cash at ATMs.

If the card has a MasterCard or Visa logo anyplace that accpets them will take the card. If it is a Maestro card and can only be used as a debit card some places won%26#39;t (actually can%26#39;t) take them. If it has MasterCard or Visa credit card logo some places will ask credit or debit, and you may be asked to enter your PIN if you pick debit or sign the slip if you pick credit, other places (like my establishment) only take Credit Cards so you won%26#39;t be given a choice and will have to sign the voucher and can%26#39;t get cash back. HSBC is great about not charging extra fees for non-customers, and there are quite a few around.

The major Credit Card crime here is getting a fraudulent card, not stolen cards, as most places are connected to the network that checks every charge, so a stolen card is useless once reported, and often the CC companies notice strange paterns of charges (I have had my amex card questioned because I made an internet purchase at a store in Florida and then tried to use it at a store in NYC)
