Not sure what to do.....Help!

Hello. I%26#39;m travelling to NY in mid August. I got a decent fare for 2 on SW into Islip based on a friends recommendation. I haven%26#39;t booked a hotel yet. I like the inexpensive hotel options available in Islip/LIC but, I%26#39;m travelling with my 59 y/o mom %26amp; don%26#39;t want commuting to be a major hassle. My friend said I could hop on a train and get to NYC easily. I%26#39;m not so sure based on what I%26#39;ve read.

I found this site after I booked my flight and am now wondering if I should cancel my SW flight %26amp; book one into LGA or JFK?

I don%26#39;t want to overwhelm my mom getting to/from the city via train, bus, taxi, etc. I wanted to save money but convenience is important as well.

Any advise is appreciated! Thanks!

If you%26#39;ve already booked the tickets they may not be cancelable. Why don%26#39;t you find that out first. Call Southwest. If they can be canceled (or reused to go somewhere else later and that%26#39;s a possibility for you) THEN figure out what the price would be to fly into LGA, JFK or EWR. What%26#39;s the difference? If it%26#39;s $300 or more for both of you (AND you%26#39;d be on a nonstop flight), I%26#39;d actually keep the airline tickets, hire a limo to take you to/from Manhattan on arrival and departure and get yourselves a hotel in Manhattan.

If you can%26#39;t cancel the tix, do as I said on the other thread. Use the train but GET A HOTEL IN MANHATTAN. Traveling daily in the August heat (or any time of year really) is crazy.

Try the Hilton Garden Inn. Stay in Manhattan or you will lose so much time traveling on the train into the city you will never get to see anything.

Staying in Islip to visit NYC would be like staying in South Elgin to visit Chicago. Not very convenient. Take the train in from Islip and get a hotel in Manhattan. FYI most new yorkers mean Manhattan when they say the City or New York - we use the acutal borough name for the other parts of the city (Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, or Staten Island).

Ok. I bit the bullet and booked another flight into LGA. Fortunately, I can use my cancelled tickets on SW towards a future flight.. I have a room at the Roosevelt on 45th/Madison (nonrefundable so I hope it%26#39;s okay).

Last question about the local attractions. I%26#39;ve seen the NYC Pass %26amp; the Double Decker bus tours. Are they worth it? All my mom wants to do is sightseeing, visit the Empire S.B, Statue of Liberty, Madame T Wax Museum, %26amp; a broadway show. Wondering if I should buy tickets to the attractions individually rather than a package deal.

Thanks so much for everyone%26#39;s help! I%26#39;ll be sure to use this forum before going on any other trips!

my personal opinion..........

1. good idea to change airports, less time consumed with travel.

2. the Roosevelt was a great choice....nice hotel, good location.

3. the Hop on /hop off tour is a good option......it has several loops included and you will get a good overall view of the city. You can hop on and off as you like...or just take the whole tour first and then decide what you want to see.

you%26#39;re doing great girl.........you%26#39;ll have a wonderful trip!!

Good idea to move your hotel to the city. You really can waste too much time if you have to travel in and out every day.

:)

But as a 56 yo, I resemble the implication that someone in their late 50%26#39;s couldn%26#39;t have done it!

LOL

Seriously, unless your mom is not in good health the trip would not have been a physical hardship as much as a time waster. As it is, even with a tour expect to walk quite a bit when you get there!

And, please, enjoy yourself. NYC is a GREAT town!!!

You did great but I would NOT commit to the hop on/off tour for August. The only place to see anything is sitting UPSTAIRS in the open. If it%26#39;s hot you%26#39;ll fry up there. Either wait til you get here to see what the weather%26#39;s like or commit to one of the tours that%26#39;s in an enclosed bus with a/c. I recommend kingofnyc.com Nypartyshuttle.com is also good.

Good luck!

I would try to talk mom out of the ESB, and into a different observation deck -- the much more pleasant Top of theRock.

Is the Empire State unpleasant? What is the Top of the Rock?

Top of the Rock is the Top of Rockefeller Center. You can expect big lines at the Empire State Building, a looong wait, and less then pleasant people working there. Top of the Rock usually has no line, nice folks, and a cool elevator ride. Try to go early evening so you can view the sun setting and watch the city light up. You can also check around the information booth at Rockefeller Plaza. There are usually people there passing out discounts on tickets for Top of the Rock.

Have a great trip!
