Hockey in October

Hope someone can help with this one please. We hope to catch an NHL game in Oct. but if the schedule for the Rangers doesn%26#39;t fit in with our dates 9-13th, we are hoping to perhaps make it to an Islanders or NJ Devils game. Which one of these would be easiest for us to get to given that we are staying in Manhattan? And if you could give some info on travel for that I would be really grateful. Thank you.

It%26#39;s easier to get to the new Prudential center where the NJ Devils play. It%26#39;s evidently a short walk from the train station.

They play against Toronto on the 12th which should be a good game (I know little about hockey, but I know the Canadians are very good ;)

To get to Nassau Coliseum where the Islanders play, you have to take a train (Long Island Railroad) and then a taxi to the arena. You%26#39;d have to pre-arrange a taxi to get back to the train station. The Islanders are playing the Boston Bruins, another good team though.

Thanks nywhiz,

is it the 2006-07 schedule that you are looking at for the Maple Leafs game? I thought the schedule for 2007-08 doesn%26#39;t come out till later in the year?

The NJ Devils site shows an Oct. 12 game with Toronto for the 2006-2007 season. The upcoming schedule has not been announced, although pre-season might have already been announced for the Devils. The NHL pre-season will begin with games in London this year from what I hear.

If you can see the Devils play the Maple Leafs, that would be a great game. The Leafs are one of the originals and wear my favorite jersey. No matter who plays the Devils, expect a low scoring game. The Devils are a very defensive team. The Rangers would be a higher scoring team since they%26#39;re led by Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan. I mention that because, if it%26#39;s your first NHL game, a high scoring game would be more fun. And the Rangers fans would be much more fun based on what we see in Atlanta. I don%26#39;t know as much about the Islanders.

If the Rangers are in town, I would go see them. Next, the Devils. The Islanders are about an hour east by train, easy enough to get to but the other 2 teams are much closer.

The Maple Leafs (Toronto%26#39;s team) weren%26#39;t too good this past year, but they are usually a decent team.

Thanks everyone - the Rangers are our first choice as we are staying very close to MSG but wanted to have another team as 2nd option in case the Rangers schedule doesn%26#39;t fit in with our stay. Can anyone tell me which train would be the option if we were to go to see the Devils? Many thanks!

PS The Ducks and the L A Kings are the teams playing in London on the 29th %26amp; 30th of Sept. but we will have left on our trip by then. Never mind the rest of the UK hockey fans get to see the Stanley Cup winners!

The Devils start playing in their new place this year. Here is the link that discusses transportation. Looks like it is very accessible via NJ Transit, Amtrak and PATH. PATH will be the cheapest.

You%26#39;re the 3rd person from the UK to ask about hockey since I discovered this forum in May. Since the UK is not a hotbed of hockey judging by the lack of players in the NHL, it is really cool that there is such an interest. Then again, that%26#39;s where Marty McSorley went when he couldn%26#39;t come back to the NHL.

Unfortunately, most Americans aren%26#39;t as interested after the lockout. It%26#39;s a shame because it is a really exciting sport - the best sport in my opinion. And I%26#39;m a girl who thinks the fights detract from the sport!

Thank you soooooo much for the info on the trains. Will check that out before we go.

Although we don%26#39;t have the standard of hockey that you have, we do have several hockey leagues within the UK. One of the teams had Theo Fleury play for them the season before last and the team that I support is owned by 2 Canadians. The league they are in allows 10 import players, most of whom are the US, Canada and Eastern Europe.. So there is an increase in the level of interest in the Uk, obviously why you%26#39;re getting more questions about it on Trip Advisor. By the way, the NHL games in London are completely sold out now and tickets are going for silly money on Ebay.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I had forgotten about Theo Fleury playing over there. He got himself into even more trouble, if I remember it correctly. He%26#39;s quite a tortured guy who deserves some happiness.

I hope you can fit in the Rangers. It would be great to see them in MSG. I%26#39;ll try to remember to post when the schedule comes out. My husband is a rabid fan who also works (for free) for one of the hockey services based out of NY. He%26#39;ll know as soon as it comes out. I just have to remember to post it here.

Hockey live is much better than on TV. I used to love hockey, but like a lot of Americans I have sort of stopped watching it. The NHL really messed things up. Too many new teams dilluted the talent, moved too many teams to the south (no offense intended, except to Raleigh who took the mighy Whale (the Hartford Whalers). Just a mess, but it is good live.
