First time traveller to New York

I%26#39;m planning a holiday to NY with my husband and 2 children, late August. I%26#39;ve never been to NY and would like some advice as to where is the best place to stay, I%26#39;d prefer to stay in a 4* hotel. What is the safest area? And any other good advice you wonderful people can give.

My previous holidays have been a great success, because of the good advice that i received.

First start by looking at the Sticky at the top of the forum page: Look before you Post....NYC FAQs

Please read the FAQ and also, help us help you by being more specific. What dates are you staying, what is your budget? Are there hotel amenities you need? Those in the NYC forum can offer suggestions, but without knowledge of what you like, the things suggested could be things that aren%26#39;t of interest to you.

Here are a few idea%26#39;s. Maybe the upper west side might suit your family?

Excelsior hotel

70 park ave

The Lowes Regency hotel

Hilton hotels have some specials and Embassy suites.

The Affinia group of hotels are always good on here.

Roger Smith

My husband, son and I stayed at the Beacon Hotel on the upper west side anf found it a great location to stay with kids. The rooms have a kitchenette and the hotel is located across the road from the Fairway Market where you can stock up on everything you need. There is also a playground a block back towards central park, and of course, the wonderful central park a short walk away. It is close to the 72nd street subway station.

There are lots of eating places nearby, and after a day downtown, or wherever it was great to return to a quiter area.

The Beacon would be wonderful. Definitely not 4*, but clean and in what I think is the best area for families. The other UWS hotels are the Lucerne, Excelsior, Belleclaire and Milburn. Jacks B%26amp;B is very popular and on a wonderful block, just a block and a half from Central Park.

In midtown, the budget Salisbury Hotel gets raves. Great location, walking distance to Times Square, Rock Center, 5th Ave., Columbus Circle, and also good transit access. The furniture is dated, but the rooms are big (by NY standards) and very clean.

we always enjoy the Excelsior-old style,but clean,and great location(Museum of Nat%26#39;l History,NY Historical Society,Central Park;subway,Amsterdam ...etc..)

Thanks everyone, apologies for not being specific.

We are thinking of travelling on the 23rd of August for 10 days. I haven%26#39;t really specified a budget, but ideally would like a good, clean and friendly hotel. My children are aged 6 and 4.

I%26#39;ll look into the suggestions you have given me so far.
