Confused!!

HI everyone, I%26#39;m so confused and thought i%26#39;d post for help, We%26#39;re flying to New york on the 16th August for 4 nights staying at the Salisbury hotel on 57th st, this is for my son%26#39;s 18th birthday ( we have a 16yr old daughter aswell ) before he goes to university, as it is a once in a lifetime break i don%26#39;t want to get it wrong, i%26#39;ve read so much now that my brain is scrabbled lol, does anyone know which is the best ferry to see the statue of liberty? where you get it from and are my plans realistic? we thought we%26#39;d go down on our first morning to catch the ferry to see the SOL, then my son would like to go to ground level zero, then maybe China town in the afternoon? is this do able? Both of our teens are skater/ new rave kids and was wondering if there are any shops like hot topic in Manhattan? Aaah i have so many questions but don%26#39;t like to ask them all incase i frighten you all away, also cheap places to eat for 2 hungrey teens around 57th st?

really sorry if i%26#39;m asking too much but ned help!!

Julie

Confused!!

If you just want a close view of the Statue take the Staten Island Ferry it%26#39;s free- round trip time is 1 hour and it passes pretty close to the statue. If you want to get off on libertty island take the Satue Of liberty ferry which you must buy tickets for and costs about $6 Per person (I think, somebody correct me if i%26#39;m wrrong)

Confused!!

I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s def do-able but not sure I%26#39;d want to be planning so much for your first day in NY incase you%26#39;re all still knackered from travelling the day before.

You%26#39;ve got your areas right though. You could do SOL on a morning if you got up early enough. Then see WTC site and St Pauls around lunchtime, then Chinatown.

Your kids would probably enjoy walking up Broadway after Chinatown and one shop they%26#39;d like would be Yellow Rat Ba$tard. (great t-shirts!)

2 places that spring to mind nearby to eat, which are pretty cheap, are Angelo%26#39;s Pizza, right next door to the Salisbury and Carnegie deli which they might enjoy for the experience (but I think the pastrami is to die for!)

Also, don%26#39;t forget about the $3 buffet breakfast at the Salisbury. You could always grab fruit etc to take with you for the day ahead.

We don%26#39;t really want to stop at the SOL as i believe you can%26#39;t go in anymore? so that sounds great, is the staten island ferry easy to find?

Thanks for the tip on the Yellow Rat Ba$tard. that%26#39;s sounds just up their street, if i do a search i should hopefully be able to find whereabouts that is on Broadway, hopefully, We have actually got free breakfast at the Salisbury so that%26#39;s good. I want to thank everyone for their help as my heads all over the place, i think your all great, thank you very much.

You can still go in the SOL but not all the way up to the torch (as was previously the case).

I meant to mention the SI Ferry though. If you play it right it will take you 1 hour there and back to Staten Island. If you miss the return one you can add another half hour onto that. That would still take less time than taking the Circle Line Ferry to the SOL what with queueing and security etc. Plus it%26#39;s free of course!

If you want to visit Chinatown you%26#39;re bound to end up in Canal Street. From Canal Street, if you walk up Broadway, just as it%26#39;s turning into Soho you%26#39;ll see YRB on your right. It%26#39;s a great place to do some serious shopping in that area anyway. If you want to map YRB it%26#39;s between Grand and Broome.

You%26#39;ll be fine!

I suggest perusing the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum. In it, you%26#39;ll find posts and links like this:

Do you know about menupages..com or Yelp? You can find great restaurnat reviews by neighbrohood, price, etc.

The Salisbury is on West 57th. Just saying 57th isn%26#39;t enough. Easiest way to get to the SI Ferry is to get the R train at 57th and 7th and take it to Whitehall Street. The SI Ferry is right there.

Here is the subway map, it will be your friend.

Bobby is right actually, if there is somewhere you def need to be (ie. from the airport to your hotel) you need to research beforehand what the cross street is otherwise you%26#39;ll just end up getting lost. Most of the taxi drivers work that way. You could give them a name of a restaurant or even your hotel and they probably woudn%26#39;t have heard of it. This is not as daunting as it sounds. Just have a look at a map (even online...... mapquest.com is good) and you%26#39;ll see that the Salisbury lies on 57th St between 6th and 7th Avenues.

This might sound confusing now but a quick look at a map a couple of times and you%26#39;ll be an expert when you get there!

Thank you all so much, i%26#39;m going to take all your advice and start reading, it%26#39;s just there%26#39;s so much to take in, about the streets aswell thanks for that, being from wales it%26#39;s a bit confusing, we%26#39;ve been to Florida lots of times, but this is so different, stopped panicing now, your all brill thanks.

Tixie - you might want to break up some of your questions into multiple posts so that people can focus on one thing at a time.

Also relax - if you have problems in NYC just ask someone, they will help!

Sorry TPXB just didn%26#39;t want to bombard people with loads of posts lol. my son hasn%26#39;t been well and this break was a last minute decision, want him to have a lovely holiday and not waste a min of it, i especially want to find shops for his ( and my daughters taste ) been on the web sit for yellow rat ba$tard, that looks great they%26#39;re into skate/ emo style clothes and it looks just what they%26#39;ll like. Want to thank everyone again, your all so kind.
