Parking outside New York City

Family of four driving from Toronto Canada to NYC. Staying in Times Sq for 5 nights. Thinking of parking outside the City (Newark Airport?) and taking public tansport in.

Does this make sense?

Any suggestions about where is best and safest place to park?

Thanks in advance

I don%26#39;t know too much about the parking and public transportation options from Newark airport, but I%26#39;ll bet you%26#39;ll have to pay to park the car and that you will take New Jersey transit (if anyone else wants to differ, they may know more options than I do) used to make a lot of car trips from Syracuse to Manhattan, leaving my car at a Metro North train station. I tried a few different stations -- there is Middletown station (at the junction of Rt 17 and Rt 84 just west of the Hudson river), which has tons of free parking, but trains are not so frequent and there is a transfer at Secaucus, NJ to get into Manhattan (arriving at Penn Station, which is not so convenient to my place on the East side)....also was at least $12 one way ticket the last time I rode...I find it more convenient to go to the green line on the east side of the Hudson -- Poughkeepsie station and Beacon both have paid public parking (pretty reasonable), more frequent trains, usually no transfer (sometimes there are late night transfers, where you basically get out of the train and walk across the platform to get into a waiting train), and arriving at Grand Central....here is the website of all these trains. If a station has public parking, it will say so! You%26#39;re taking a gamble if you try to find street parking near one that doesn%26#39;t advertise parking...

p.s. the green line has a nice view of the hudson most of the way -- sit on the right side of train when traveling into the city. the train from middletown has nice views of.....well, lots of trees and then people%26#39;s back yards and then some not so scenic stuff...
