24hrs in NYC - 1st timer

Will be in NY during the first week in August, driving from Baltimore. Staying at hotel in 42nd Street - East. Any suggestions please, for myself, wife and two children (15 %26amp; 13) for an itinerary that gives us a quick intro to NY. Will be arriving about 2.00 pm, and leaving about 6.00 pm the next day. Thanks

Could you imagine getting a ';quick intro'; to London in the same amount of time? I think you have the same problem in NYC. As I see it, you have two choices:

1) Ride a tour bus, but don%26#39;t get off it

2) explore things in midtown, near your hotel. You could walk across 42nd Street from the East River, passing the UN, Grand Central, the Public LIbrary, Bryant Park, and Times Square. Brielfly stop in at each thing you pass. Walk north through Times Square to 50th Street, and turn east. Continue to Rockefeller Center, and go up to Top of the Rock. When you come down, walk up Fifth Ave past St. Patrick%26#39;s Cathedral and the shops to Central Park. Walk back south also on Fifth, or on Sixth, or on Madison, or on Lexington Avenues to 42nd Street.

With so little time, don%26#39;t try to see ';everything.'; You can spend the first day seeing some midtown sights, as GWB suggests. 42nd Street, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, definitely go up to the Top of the Rock (much better than the Empire State Bldg.). The next day you can explore another neighborhood, perhaps the West Village or the Financial District.

Be sure to spend time soaking up the place instead of racing all over town. A good excuse to see Central Park is to lunch at the Boathouse Restaurant. It%26#39;s very pleasant during the week, but don%26#39;t even try and get near it on the weekend!

If you want to see as many attractions as possible, take the Party Shuttle tour. But with a short trip, I wouldn%26#39;t want to spend so much time on a bus.

Many thanks for these useful suggestions. I know 24hrs is such a short time. Hopefully, we will return again in the future for a longer stay.

Look at Grayline tours and see if you can take a tour to see many of the ';main '; sites. Maybe you can even sqeeze in a nice dinner somewhere.

EAch person in your group should write down the 1 or 2 things they HAVE to see. Then figure out how to see them all. I would probably do some exploring on day one and take a tour on day 2 like kingofnyc.com that will cover a lot of ground. If you don%26#39;t want to spend the entire day on a tour, the midtown/downtown one goes from 9-1:30 and covers a lot. These tours are in enclosed air conditioned buses. The hop on/off tours require you sit upstairs in the open. If it%26#39;s hot, which is usually is in August, you%26#39;ll fry!

With two teenagers, you may want to eat dinner in the Village, a funky area that is friendly to teens and families. I suggest Pasta Presto nymag.com/listings/restaurant/pasta-presto02/ for your family, Excellent Italian food, family friendly prices and tons of options. I am speaking from experience with two teenage daughters. NYU is in the Village too. A short walk across Houston Street before or after dinner will bring you into SOHO (South of Houston) which is filled with funky shops and interesting art galleries. I would spend some time up town but definitely go downtown too.
