New York with a 15-year old next year

Hi

I have promised my daughter a trip to New York next year if she does well in her GCSE%26#39;s, probably late August or September., though any recommendations on the best time to visit would be appreciated.

I have started looking at hotels and am quite impressed with the Salisbury Hotel. Does anyone have any comments on this hotel? It does seem to have good reviews on TA. Also any recommendations what to do in a 4 night stay.

I last went to New York in 1973 when I was a teenager, so really it will be like a first time visit for me too as I can%26#39;t remember too much about the place (except that it was too dangerous then to walk around at night) which I know has changed now. She loves shopping but mostly wants to see the sights, especially Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building.

I%26#39;d appreciate and advice or comemnts.

The Salisbury is a great choice. Take a look at the firsthand reviews here on tripadvisor, and browse through the Candid Traveler Photos.

You%26#39;ve got plenty of time to plan. Start by reading through the trip reports that are posted as a ';sticky'; on the top of the NYC forum. You%26#39;ll get plenty of great ideas.

Definitly check out the FAQ%26#39;s at the top of the forum, that will give you great information!!

I%26#39;ve noticed that the hotels are cheaper in August too-even though it is the hottest/humid month! Check out travelzoo.com when you get closer to your trip for hotel discounts.

I would also recommend a broadway show.

It usually makes sense to wait until someone is sixteen before taking him/her to New York. The reason being that the extra year of life endows them with the perception necessary to extract the optimum benefit from the Big Apple. If you type the words ';New York not for Youngsters'; into the search engine at the top left hand corner of the page, you will unearth a 400-post thread which explores the age issue in substantial detail. There was quite an interesting post on this thread from Paul in Peoria in which he explained how his thirteen year old son was repulsed by the fast-moving nature of the shows on Broadway. Apparently, things move a lot more slowly in Peoria and his son just wanted to return there so he could live his life at a slower pace.

Just wanted to comment on the previous post before mine. I went to New York last year (13 years old), and am going again this August and I am 14 years old. I thought New York was amazing!! 15 is a perfectly fine age for someone to go to New York.

well, let%26#39;s face it, there is a world of difference between a 15 year old girl and a 13 year old boy. She will love it!!!!

It is perhaps salutary to point out that Hilary Clinton waited until Chelsea was nineteen before taking her to New York. ';I want her to be able to imbibe the atmosphere with imagination, style and brio';, Hilary is quoted as saying in an interview with the New York Times which was published on 19 September, 1997. When asked whether this late introduction to the wonders of New York would cramp her daughter%26#39;s style, she responded, ';a mature city demands a mature response from the people who are fortunate enough to visit it.';

LollyB - take your daughter to a show, you%26#39;ll both love it. I%26#39;d recommend Wicked (but tickets are hard to get so get them as soon as you know your dates). I wouldn%26#39;t worry about her age at all. When my family comes to visit they usually stay at one of the Affinia hotels and they%26#39;re pretty good, clean, good locations, etc. Also, NYC is so safe now, there%26#39;s really no unsafe time to walk around, as long as you dont%26#39; do anything crazy (like walk around waving $$). If you want to shop and see sights, walk up 5th avenue toward Rockefeller Plaza %26amp; St. Patricks. Also, don%26#39;t miss Century 21 across from the World Trade Center - it%26#39;s kind of a discount shop but has all the designer brands.

oh yeah by the way i am a female

I have come this far without taking any parenting (or any other) advice from Hilary............but thanks!

Tennisquirtt.......yes, and i meant that you (and most 15 year old girls) are much more mature than the 13 year old boy from Peoria who wanted to go home!!! : )

mlr425- I agree with BOTH of your statements! =)
