The lockers which are on Liberty Island just after your second %26#39;frisking%26#39; are rather groovy in that they check your fingerprint before allowing you access.
To sum up, you can take a purse (not sure why you would want to be carrying a computer around with you) but you will need to store it in the locker during your visit to SOL. I don%26#39;t believe any restrictions apply to Ellis Island - someone might be able to confirm this.
